Description

Garden Cottage is an L-shaped dwelling that originated as two separate 16th-century timber-framed buildings positioned at right angles to each other. These were linked and extended in the late 18th century, becoming three dwellings, with some minor extensions made in the 20th century. The exterior is primarily from the 18th century, constructed of coursed flint with a thatched roof. The building has one storey and an attic, featuring regular fenestration with four to five windows within the angle. The roof is half-hipped, slightly lower on one wing, and the eaves are raised above the upper windows. The flint walls are complemented by brick quoins, cambered arches, and a plinth, with signs of a new doorway and a doorway that has been replaced by a window. The windows are casements, and there are boarded doors, one of which is located within an open porch that has a gabled thatch roof and a timber frame on a base wall. Inside, remnants of the timber frame can be seen along with two large one-sided fireplaces, which were originally built outside the frame, with one now enclosed by the 18th-century extension.
