Description

Aldershot Methodist Church is a non-conformist church built in 1875, marked by its foundation stone. The church is constructed from local sandstone rubble with bathstone dressings, and part of the rear is brick. It features slate roofs and crested ridge tiles. The building has a nave with aisles, transepts, a chancel, and a north-west tower, showcasing a mixed Gothic style that includes Early English, Decorated, and Perpendicular elements. The main west window is a fine example of Early English design, with a portal below it. The four-stage corner tower has another portal, a lancet window at the second stage, a triple lancet at the third stage, a clock, and an arcaded top in ashlar with crocketted pinnacles.

The Queens Road front displays three aisle gables with reticulated windows, while the transept features large paired windows and a rose window above. Inside, the church is open and spacious, characterized by an open hammerbeam roof. Slender paired cast iron columns support a five-bay arcade made of striped brick and stone pointed arches, with a clerestory above. A single taller column supports the larger transept arches, and there is a stone arch leading to the polygonal chancel, which is illuminated by triple lancets. The west gallery houses a 1906 organ, and the choir stalls and lectern date from 1932. Most of the furnishings are original pine. The transept galleries may have been removed. This church, which has undergone some alterations, was built for the significant Victorian town of Aldershot and holds important townscape value as it is the only notable tower in the town.
