21 and 23, West Street

21 and 23 West Street is an early 17th century small house that has been divided into two and extended at the back. It features a timber frame with wattle and daub filling, and the front is rendered with a moulded cornice and blocking course beneath a clay tiled roof with a brick chimney. The building has two storeys and three windows, with sash windows on the first floor, one of which has glazing bars. The ground floor has late 19th century and modern shops.

Inside No 21, there is a baffle entry with a large brick stack and stairs in their original position at the back. The central room has a heavy chamfered beam with stepped tongued stops. Visible framing includes posts that are jowled at the angles, as well as plates and ties. Some external framing can be seen in the outshut. The roof is of clasped purlin type with principal rafters that have been reduced above the purlin, and it features triple queen post trusses. The rafters are halved at the apex, with wind braces and longer diagonal braces at the corners. There are good small Roman carpenters' marks on the rafters, which continue above No 23, although the other timber in that part is concealed. The original thick plank floors are still present.
