Description
Thatchwell Cottage is a cottage that was originally a pair, dating from the 17th century, and was altered and reclad in the early 19th century. It has a 20th-century rear wing. The exterior is made of brickwork, with a roof that is part tiled and part thatched. Although it has timber-framed origins, the exterior has been significantly altered. The front (east) side has one storey and an attic, featuring three above four windows. The roof is half-hipped thatch with eyebrow dormers. The walls are primarily constructed in English bond, with one cambered opening, a cement plinth, and alterations that indicate the original early 19th-century four-door arrangement has been changed to one doorway, one window, and two filled openings. The windows include casements, some with leaded lights and one cast-iron frame, along with other 20th-century steel casements. There is a boarded door in a plain frame, set within a shallow brick porch that has a gabled tile roof. The rear (west) elevation is irregular, with the lower half of the roof tiled and featuring two dormers. The walls are a mix of English and Flemish bonds, with some flint panels and stretchers in the wing. The north gable displays exposed framing, and the lower walls contain bands of flint.
