Description

The Forge is a house that dates from the 15th century, with later additions in the early 17th century, 18th century, and early 19th century. It features red brick walls laid in Flemish bond with blue headers, a first-floor band, cambered arches on the ground floor, and a stepped plinth. A former doorway has been filled in, and two small windows have been added on either side of the entrance in the 20th century. The roof is tiled, with a half-hipped design on the rear wing and a catslide at the back, while the narrow west wing has a hipped slate roof.

The building includes a late-medieval two-bay timber-framed hall with an early 17th-century fireplace at one end, along with first floors and a staircase wing. There are 18th-century extensions at the west end and rear, and the forge at the east end, which likely began as a timber-framed barn, has 19th-century industrial windows. A narrow early 19th-century wing is located at the west end.

The north front, which has been refaced with timber framing, is symmetrical and has two storeys with three windows featuring leaded casements. A 20th-century open timber-framed porch with a gabled tile roof and a boarded door is present. The single-storey east wing, which was the former forge, has three windows with narrow vertical panes and a plain doorway. The single-storey west wing contains two plain doors and a casement. The rear elevation features a gable with a tiled front on the staircase block. Inside, the exposed framing and other details reveal the various phases of construction, including a cellar beneath the western 18th-century bay.
