Description
The Church of St Peter is a parish church located in Ropley. It features a Norman nave from the 11th century, with 12th-century transepts, a 13th-century chancel that includes a south chapel, and a 14th-century timber-framed bell tower set into the south transept. The south porch dates from around 1700, while the north chapel, serving as a vestry, was added in 1846, and the north aisle, which covers the north transept, was constructed in 1896. The exterior primarily reflects the 1896 work, with flint walls accented by stone and brick dressings, and a tile roof with three ridges. The oldest parts of the church are the south wall of the nave and the south transept, which feature 14th-century walling in the south chapel. These sections include a 12th-century doorway, a 15th-century Perpendicular south door, a 16th-century window in the nave, and a small 14th-century window in the chapel, while the rest of the details are Victorian. Inside, the church is generally Victorian but contains medieval piscinas, a 15th-century octagonal font, a Royal Coat of Arms with a Queen Anne device but later lettering from 1791, and a hatchment. Historical photographs indicate that the 1896 restoration involved significant alterations, including the removal of Georgian fittings and a west gallery.
