Description

Sydmonton Court is a Tudor E-shaped mansion that dates from the 16th, 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. It has two storeys and an attic, with a roof covered in blue tiles from the last period. The roof is hipped and features a regular series of gabled dormers with lattice windows. The central part of the recessed south front displays two 16th-century stepped brick gables, one in the western angle and the other likely central to the original front, with a third gable in the eastern angle now lost due to later reconstruction. Tall 19th-century octagonal chimney shafts rise above the structure.

A timber-framed bell turret with a pyramid tiled roof sits above the west range. The walls are constructed of red brick in English bond, with small stone quoins that stop near the top, where a parapet has been created by continuing the walling in Flemish bond up to a stone coping. The south end of the west wing features two windows with raised brick architraves and a first-floor band. The east elevation is distinguished by two large attached stacks, while the symmetrical north elevation includes four windows with plain cement architraves, Gothic angular bays on each side, and Gothic mouldings on the bays and first-floor band.

The recessed part of the south front has been brought forward in the 18th century and conceals an angular red brick and stone Tudor stair turret located in the west side angle. The windows are sashes set in reveals. The west elevation shows several detailed alterations from the last period, and the east elevation includes a single-storeyed addition with a Tuscan Order rendered in cement and a recessed portico.
