Description
The Church of St Mary, built between 1849 and 1853, possibly by T H Wyatt, replaces a medieval structure. It is designed in the Decorated style and features a chancel with a north-side opening leading to a vestry, an aisleless nave, a south porch, and a west tower. The roof is covered with blue tiles arranged in lozenge bands. The walls are made of squared knapped flint with stone dressings, including hood-moulds, a moulded plinth, and diagonal stepped buttresses. The church has both single and double windows, the latter featuring reticulate tracery, and a three-light east window. The exterior includes a blocked north door, a south door, and decorative voussoirs on the nave side of the tower arch, which originally served as the chancel arch of the old church. The tower is topped with a stone parapet adorned with cusped panelling, and the tops of the diagonal buttresses are finished with slender detached pinnacles. Inside, the church is lined with Bathstone ashlar, and the pulpit is set within an opening that has an arched head within a gable. The nave has a scissors roof, while the chancel roof is panelled. The church is currently adapted as a private musical studio.
