Description
This is a K6 telephone kiosk designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and constructed by various contractors. It dates from the 20th century, specifically 1935, and is located approximately 13 metres southeast of number 16 Southington Lane.
The kiosk is built of cast iron and glass, and is painted red overall. It is square in plan, and features long, horizontal glazing panels in the door and sides. The crowns on the top panels are applied, rather than perforated. A shallow-curved roof shelters rectangular white display signs reading "TELEPHONE". Some of the original glass windows have been replaced with polycarbonate.
The interior now contains modern telecommunications equipment.
The K6 telephone kiosk represents a significant milestone in 20th-century industrial design, and was designed by Giles Gilbert Scott for the General Post Office to commemorate King George V's Silver Jubilee. It developed from his earlier K2 design, adopting a more streamlined and cost-effective form. Approximately 70,000 K6 kiosks were produced, and they remain an iconic feature of the British streetscape.
The kiosk is designated at Grade II for its iconic status as an example of industrial design, demonstrating the adaptation of Neoclassical forms to modern technology. It also possesses group value with the nearby listed Tithe Cottage (Grade II) and numbers 12 and 14 Southington Lane (Grade II).
