Description

The gate piers, flanking walls, and gates at Danehurst date from 1847 and create the eastern entrance to the Danehurst Estate.

The structure features stone piers, flanking walls, and wrought-iron gates, all facing east onto the A275. The design is symmetrical and has a Classical character. The tall piers, approximately 4 meters high, are made of squared, ashlar stone and have pilasters on their side faces topped with a Corinthian-type moulding. Each pier is capped with a cyma-recta shaped top, which is further adorned with a ball finial.

The flanking walls stand about 1.5 meters high and feature a triangular, scroll-type moulding at the point where they meet the piers. These walls have a shallow moulded base and curve away from the piers. Each wall is constructed from horizontally oriented ashlar blocks and ends with a squat, panelled pier that has a cyma-recta shaped cap topped with triangular pediments.

The double gates are intricately designed in wrought iron. The side rails include ball finials, while the top and bottom rails feature a cross-pattern embellished with flower heads. Decorative scroll-work rises from the top rails to the center of the gates. Each gate is marked with the date '1847' and showcases a large fleur-de-lys motif at the center, flanked by scroll-work. At the top, there is a circle containing three interlocking horse shoes, supporting a plume of feathers.
