Description
The entrance gates and piers to Welford Park date from the mid-19th century and are made of stone and iron. The structure features tall stone piers with double gates, which are flanked by pedestrian gates and lower piers.
The piers have moulded plinths and are designed with chamfered rustication. The central piers are topped with corniced caps that have cavetto moulds leading up to pyramidal finials. The lower piers have similar tops but lack cornices.
The main gates are adorned with a flamboyant scrolled overthrow, which includes a central oval that encloses the initials AW, topped with the crest of an armoured leg. The side gates feature similar overthrows that rise to taller piers, and the gates themselves have scrolled side panels and lock rails, with plain vertical bars and pointed-headed dog rails.
