Description

This building, known as "Chateaubriand," is a range of premises that includes E Workman, a greengrocer, and E Watson and Sons, estate agents, along with "Villiers." It is likely a 17th century or earlier timber-framed structure that was refaced in the 18th century with painted brick on the ground floor and tile-hung above, although some of the upper part is now partly painted as well. "Villiers" is entirely of painted brick and is probably a later addition. The building features a tiled roof and modern shop windows on the ground floor, while the upper floor has sash windows, some of which have glazing bars. It has two storeys and an attic, with five windows and three gabled dormers. The Chateaubriand section retains timber-framed elements from an aisled medieval open hall house.
