Description

The House of Gill is located at 101 High Street and dates from the 18th century, although it has a front that belongs to an earlier building. It is two storeys high and features two windows. The exterior is stuccoed, and the ground floor slightly projects, with pilasters positioned between the windows. The roof is tiled. A tablet on the house notes that it was home to clockmakers from 1680 to 1791, specifically mentioning Daniel Gill, a banker, in 1791. According to the Victoria County History, the house retains parts of a 15th-century roof and has a cellar with stone walls. The House of Gill is part of a group that includes the George Hotel and several other consecutive properties.
