Description

Mint Chambers is a 16th-century house that was built partly on a medieval wall, which can still be seen at the rear. The exterior is currently covered with plaster that is grooved to resemble masonry, but it is likely timber framed underneath. The building has three storeys and two windows. The second storey features two gables with moulded 17th-century bargeboards that overhang on curved brackets, although the overhang is now covered with plaster. There are casement windows in the gables and 18th-century sash windows on the first floor. Curved cornices from 18th-century shop windows remain on either side of the door, but the original windows have been replaced with smaller flat sash windows, and the house is no longer used as a shop. The doorway is framed with fluted detailing. A plaque on the house indicates that alterations were made in 1728. To the southwest, there is a modern red brick addition with one window. Mint Chambers is part of a group that includes Nos 50 to 55.
