Description
Nos. 56 and 57 High Street comprise two 18th-century houses. No. 56 is actually attached to a shop at the corner and is also known as No. 21 Mermaid Street, and is therefore considered by the Rate Office to be located in Mermaid Street, despite being numbered 56 High Street. The houses are three storeys high and have three windows in total. The ground floor is painted brick, while the upper floors are hung with tiles. An eaves cornice is present, featuring modillions. The original glazing bars are intact. The doorway to No. 56 is within a frame and has a flat hood above it.
