Description
The Lawn, numbers 1 to 10, is a group of five pairs of semi-detached villas dating from around 1860 and designed by Decimus Burton. The villas are stuccoed with low-pitched slate roofs and wide, bracketed eaves. They are arranged over three storeys, with four windows each, plus two-storey side wings which are slightly set back. The windows are sash windows without glazing bars, with moulded architraves, small brackets beneath the sills, and a cill band on the second floor. Ground floor windows have ogee-shaped canopies and ornate cast iron balconies; the canopy at number 5 is missing. Later additions include raised two-storey side wings at numbers 1, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10, bringing them up to three storeys. The group is listed for its group value and contribution to Burton’s St Leonards development.
