Description

This is a group of five pairs of semi-detached villas, built around 1850 in Islington. The construction uses brown and yellow stock brick laid in a Flemish bond pattern, with stucco applied to the ground floor and dressings. The roofs are slate, hipped, and feature projecting eaves and brick stacks at the centre. The houses are laid out with a side-hall entrance plan, and are three storeys high, with some attic space. Each pair originally had two windows, although number 165 has an entrance on its return side, and the others have deeply recessed, linked entrance bays on the ground floor. Most entrances have round arches with simple architraves, leading to panelled doors with plain fanlights topped by stucco cornices. Some have original balustrades above the entrance bays, while others have 20th-century additions to the upper parts of these bays. The ground floor windows are 4/4 sash windows with cast-iron window guards. The brick upper storeys feature stucco quoins, architraves, and a first-floor sill band. First-floor windows are long sash windows with console brackets beneath their cornices, and include two-bay iron balcony railings and iron brackets. Numbers 163 and 165 have been altered. Number 165 also has an entrance on its right return, facing Huntingdon Street. Iron railings are attached to the property.
