Description

The Uplands is a group of six semi-detached villas dating from around 1860, designed by Decimus Burton. They are situated on Maze Hill, St Leonards, and include a private road and front garden. The villas are constructed of coursed stone with rusticated quoins. They are two storeys high with a basement. The window arrangement is 1:2:1 across the front of each villa. The central two bays are pedimented, incorporating an attic window within the pediment. Projecting one window to either side is topped with a parapet and cornice. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars; the ground floor of the centre two bays has later wooden canted bay windows with sashes. The roofs are low-pitched slate roofs, and the chimneys are rendered with cornices. Nos 1 and 2 have rusticated stone window surrounds, along with a later 19th-century south-east wing set back from the main structure. Nos 3, 4, 5, and 6 feature moulded stucco window architraves, with cornices above the first-floor centre and flanking ground-floor windows. A small Venetian attic window is set within the tympanum of the pediment. The basements are rusticated. No 6 has a later 19th-century corner porch and a long, single-storey wing, set back on the right, featuring a stuccoed entablature.
