Description

The James Burton Monument is a small structure located within the grounds of Gloucester Lodge, north of St Leonards Gardens, which were part of James Burton's original layout of St Leonards. Erected in the late 19th century, the monument features a short pink granite obelisk with a rounded head, standing on a plinth. In front of the obelisk is a semi-circular basin, and above the plinth, a fountain pipe emits a jet of water into the basin. Near the top of the obelisk, there is a bronze plaque depicting Burton's profile, with the inscription "James Burton, Founder of St Leonards, 1828. Born 1761. Died 1837."
