Description
North Lodge Pay Gate was designed by Decimus Burton around 1830, or possibly built as part of James Burton's layout of St Leonards in 1828. It served as the north gate of the Subscription Garden, now known as St Leonards Gardens, and originally included two lodges for gardeners, which have since been converted into private residences, with No 16 being enlarged.
The building features sandstone ashlar construction and consists of a high, moulded Tudor arch carriageway with recessed moulded spandrels, topped by a shield. Above the archway is a room with a three-light casement window, which has a dripmould above it, and an embattled parapet. Each side of the gate has a three-storey lodge with one window and an embattled parapet above. The first floor of each lodge has three-light casement windows with dripstones above, while other windows are two-light casements. The lodges are supported by buttresses at the corners.
No 17 has a small, later 19th-century two-storey addition to the west, designed in a similar style to the lodge, featuring a splayed porch with a four-centred arch, but finished in cement and topped with a plain parapet. No 16 has a modern two-storey addition that is rendered and somewhat incongruous with the original design.
