Description

Baston Lodge is an 1850s Italianate villa built by Decimus Burton as a seaside residence for John Ward. It was constructed in the 18th century style and is built of coursed stone with chamfered quoins, simple stone architraves, and horizontal bands. The building has low-pitched slate roofs with eaves supported by stone console brackets. It is two storeys and has an attic and basement, and has an asymmetrical design.

The south-east elevation, facing the garden, features a projecting right-hand section and a two-storey ashlar bay on the left, with two and three-light round-headed windows. A ground-floor verandah with an ogee-shaped canopy is located on the left, and there are three flat-headed dormers in the roof. The south-west side, facing the road, has a pedimented gable with a chimney breast rising through it, flanked by two round-headed attic windows. A porch is set back on the left with a round arch and a cornice resting on large consoles. To the left of the porch is a three-storey tower with a low-pitched pyramidal roof, wide eaves on stone brackets, and a tripartite round-headed window on the second floor.
