Description
This is an 18th-century building on the High Street, with rear wings likely dating to the early 18th century. The front of the building is stuccoed brick, with brick exposed on the right-hand return. It has a parapet and two storeys with an attic. The ground floor features a large Victorian shop front with fluted, slender columns supporting a fascia with a modillion cornice and plate glass windows. The first floor has three late 19th-century sash windows without glazing bars. Two flat-roofed dormers are situated behind the parapet. The roof is steeply pitched and tiled.
At the rear are two brick wings: one three storeys and attic, gable-ended, and the other two storeys with a hipped tile roof. A blue plaque on the front commemorates General Sir John Moore, who was billeted here in 1805.
Inside, an 18th-century staircase has square balusters, a moulded string, and a moulded handrail. One first-floor room retains fielded panelling and a cornice, although it is now boarded over. Several 17th-century panelled doors are also present. The building is constructed over the site of an earlier structure, with stone walling found in the cellars.
