Description
The Hope and Anchor Public House is a Wealden hall house that dates back to the mid 15th century, with alterations and extensions made in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The building features a mix of part timber framing encased in painted brick and sections that are entirely painted brick. It has an old tiled gabled and hipped roof, with slate covering the rear section. The structure has a rectangular plan that originally consisted of three framed bays but now has two, with a crosswing on the south side and a pent roof extension at the rear.
The building stands one and a half storeys tall, with two storeys and a cellar. There are two chimneys: one located on the left of the crosswing and another on the ridge at the far right. The front of the right-hand section has three bays, featuring 20th-century leaded casements on the upper level, which are accented by small gablets that break the eaves. There are two entrance doors with a three-light casement window between them, and a five-light cant bay with a flat roof on the right side. To the left, there is a gable with a two-light casement on the first floor and a wide entry door below, which has a plain overlight and is approached by two steps.
Inside, one bay on the ground floor retains elements of the timber frame, including a principal beam and wide joists that show carpenter's marks in the correct sequence. The upper level features jowled posts and long, wide, curved braces, with a queen post roof.
