Description

Astwood House is an early 18th-century house located on the north side of Shute End in Wokingham. It is constructed of vitreous brick with red dressings and features an old tile gabled roof. The house has a central staircase plan and consists of two storeys and a basement, with flanking chimneys and a chamfered plinth. A moulded brick string runs at the first-floor level, and there is a moulded brick eaves cornice. The front of the house has three bays, with sash windows that have glazing bars, although the ground floor windows have been altered. The central entrance features a six-panel door adorned with a wreath scroll knocker and a three-pane rectangular fanlight displaying a delicate pattern of circles. The door is accessed by a flight of stone steps leading to a landing that is at right angles to the front and includes a wreathed iron handrail. To the right of the entrance is a garage door with a casement window above, which is set back from the line of the adjoining house, No. 41, which is listed separately.

Inside, there are six brick steps leading down to the basement, which contains two brick vaults. The early 18th-century staircase features stick balusters, round moulded newels, and a plain handrail. The dining room boasts a marble fireplace, and the house has a queen strut roof with butt purlins, which may date from an earlier period.
