Description

The Parish Rooms, built in 1893, are located on Shute End in Wokingham. This building is constructed of brick with lighter brick dressings and features a steeply pitched and gabled slate roof. It is designed in an L-shape with gables on the north and east sides, and includes a clock tower at the northeast corner. The structure consists of one and a half storeys and two storeys, with a large chimney featuring fluted shafts and clay pots on the gables of the south and west sides.

The windows are mullioned and transomed. On the Reading Road front, there is a three-stage tower on the left, which has a pair of planked doors set in a recessed reveal with a four-centred arch made of lighter brick, topped with an ogee drip mould and a floral cluster at the apex. The second stage of the tower features sash windows and an inscription panel below. The third stage includes clock dials on the east and north faces, with a moulded cornice that serves as the base for the bell turret. The bell turret is adorned with a Doric canopy and has a stone base, with one engaged column at each corner and moulded wooden arched openings on each face, complete with keystones and a moulded cornice. At the top, a small semi-circular metal dome is surmounted by a wrought iron weathervane.

To the right of the tower, there are three gables of unequal size, along with a plinth and moulded brick eaves. On the Station Road front, there is a large one-bay gable on the left, three linked cross windows on the ground floor, and a sash window above. The clock tower is positioned on the right, set well back, and features two cross windows on the return side. The Parish Rooms and clock tower serve as a significant landmark at the west end of the town.
