Description

WOKINGHAM SHUTE END SU 8068 NE (South side) 17/19 Parish Rooms 14.10.86 G.V. II Parish rooms. 1893. Brick with lighter brick dressings, steeply pitched and gabled slate roof. L-plan with gables to north and east; clock tower on north east corner. One and a half storeys, and 2 storeys. Large chimney with fluted shafts and clay pots on gable on south and west sides. Mullioned and transomed windows. Reading Road front:- 3 stage tower on left: with pair of planked doors in recessed reveal with 4-centred arch in lighter brick, ogee drip mould with floral cluster at apex. Second stage with sash windows and inscription panel under. Third stage has clock dial on east and north faces and moulded cornice forming'base to bell turret. Bell turret has Doric canopy with stone base; one engaged column on each corner, moulded wooden arched openings on each face, with keystone and moulded cornice. Small semi-circular metal dome surmounted by wrought iron weathervane. Section to right of tower has 3 gables of unequal size, plinth and moulded brick eaves. Station Road front:-large one bay gable on left, 3 linked cross windows on ground floor, sash window over. Clock tower on right set well back. 2 cross windows on return to tower. The Parish Rooms and clock tower form a very important landmark at the west end of the town.
