Description

Nos. 12A-14 is a house and shop dating from the 15th century, with a front that was added in the late 18th century. The building features a timber frame with a brick front and steep-pitched clay tiled roofs. It is two storeys high and has a two-bay timber framed range that runs parallel to the street, with a 20th-century extension at the rear. The ground floor has a 20th-century shopfront, while the first floor includes two small-paned sash windows and a dentil eaves cornice.

Inside, the southern bay appears to have been an open hall, as indicated by its heavily sooted roof. The northern bay is enclosed by stud partitions and has a first-floor level floor. It features a central tie beam with a crown post. The southern bay has a collar purlin roof, with collars that are lap jointed to the rafters and appear to be cambered. The northern bay has lost its collars and now has side purlins and inserted queenposts. The first floor contains a plank door with hinges that may date from the late 17th century, which is when these alterations likely occurred. Other historical features may still be present beneath later boxing in and rendering. Access to the upper parts is provided by the 20th-century rear extension, which is not of special interest.

This building is included as a surviving example of a late medieval town house.
