Description
Markham House, located at No. 20 on Broad Street in Wokingham, is a large house dating from around 1840 that has been converted into offices. The building is constructed of brick and features a low-pitched gabled slate roof. It stands two storeys tall, with attics and a basement, and has large chimneys that are flush with the gable walls. The front of the house is symmetrical with three bays, showcasing sash windows, including tripartite windows on the ground floor. The central entrance is a four-panel door with a plain rectangular fanlight and sidelights, all framed by a wide painted Doric surround that includes pilasters, a frieze, a cornice, and a blocking course. This entrance is accessed by ten moulded stone steps and has two iron scrapers. Additionally, there are cast iron railings with an acanthus pattern across the front, set on a low wall between short flanking brick walls and piers topped with stone capping, which return on either side of the steps leading to the entrance door.
