Description

The Courtyard is a row of cottages that have been converted into shops and offices. Originally built in the early 16th century, the structure was partly rebuilt and extended in the early 17th century, with further alterations made in the 18th century and late 20th century. The building features a combination of timber framing with brick infill and some areas that are encased or painted brick. It has an old tile gabled roof that is half hipped at the north end.

The front range has a rectangular plan consisting of six framed bays, with two rear extensions that include two and three framed bays respectively. The building is two storeys high. The road front displays Nos. 22 and 24, which have 19th-century sash windows on the first floor. The ground floor features late 20th-century shop fronts, with semi-circular arched openings for No. 24 that splay inwards towards No. 22. To the right, there is a yard entry with a 19th-century angular bay and a gablet above. Nos. 26 and 28 have four 18th-century sash windows with altered glazing, set in moulded architrave frames, along with a small fixed light to the left of the left-hand sash. The ground floor also has two 20th-century shopfronts. Inside, parts of the timber frame are visible, showcasing jowled posts of good quality.
