Description
This is a late 18th-century town house, now offices and part house. It was altered and extended in the mid-19th century and mid-20th century. The building is constructed of brick with a slate gabled roof and follows an L-shaped plan, with a 19th-century service wing at the rear, now forming numbers 1 and 3 Rectory Road, which are separately listed. The house has two storeys, a cellar, and attics.
The front facade features three dormers with flat lead heads and two-light casement windows. There are sash windows with altered glazing. The front has a projecting plinth, a painted string at the level of the first-floor window sills, a narrow moulded cornice with modillions, a 19th-century parapet, and stone coping. A six-panelled central door is accessed by six stone steps and is flanked by sidelights, one with a semi-circular head. A 19th-century one-bay extension exists on the left, featuring a parapet, coping, large French casement windows on the first floor, an iron balcony, and a pent roof.
The return front facing Rectory Road includes a gabled end with two flanking chimneys, a cross window on the ground floor, and a plain ledged door to the left. To the left of the door is a former service wing featuring a Gothic window on the first floor and two sash windows with glazing bars to the left. The ground floor of the service wing has four similar sash windows and a plain ledged door to the left, and continues as numbers 1 and 3 Rectory Road.
