Description
No. 22 Market Place is a hall house dating from the early 16th century, which has been altered and refronted in the 18th century and further modified in the 20th century. The building features part timber framing that is encased in painted brick, topped with a tile hipped roof. It has a U-plan layout with two framed bays at the rear, where the former hall is located in the second bay. The structure is two storeys high and includes a moulded and bracketed timber cornice. On the first floor, there are two tripartite sash windows with glazing bars. The ground floor has two 20th-century bow windows with glazing bars, situated beneath a continuous moulded cornice, flanking plain entrance doors on either side. The central part of the building is recessed, featuring a plain central column and two plain shop windows behind it. Inside, fragments of the timber frame are visible, including a jowled post and part of a tie beam.
