Description
No. 17 Market Place is a small house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the late 16th century and has been altered in the 17th century, 18th century, and late 20th century. The building features a mix of construction materials, including part timber frame, part brick, and part painted render, topped with an old tile gabled roof. Originally designed in a T-plan with a stair turret at the rear, it has since been modified to a rectangular shape. The structure is two storeys high with an attic.
In the attic, there is a small three-light iron leaded casement window, while the first floor has an oriel window with sash windows that include glazing bars. The ground floor has a 20th-century shop front that is not of special interest. Inside, some of the original timber frame is visible in the double-height ground and first floors, along with a small 20th-century gallery at the mezzanine level. A small section of late 16th-century cut stair balusters has been retained in the attic.
