Description
Rebecca's Well is a well house built around 1870, located in Crazies Hill, Wargrave. The well-head basin was constructed for the Reverend Greville Phillimore, and the well house above was designed by Gertrude Jekyll, who also painted the gable. The structure is made of roughcast brick and features a semi-conical tile roof with a gabled front. The plan is semi-circular, and the gabled front includes a semi-circular arch, a brick band, and dentils above. The painting in the gable, created by Jekyll, includes the inscription: "Rebeka and the Servants of Abraham at the well of Nahor. And the servants ran to meet her and said let I pray thee drink a little water of thy pitcher." The painting depicts Rebecca and a servant by the well and appears to have been restored. Inside the well house, there is a carved stone inscription at the back with a cross above it, set in a segmental stone panel.
