Description

This is a block of three and four-storey houses dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, which were altered in the 18th and 19th centuries. The buildings have timber frames with brick facing to most, although some areas are stuccoed. Number 47 has a slate mansard attic and painted brickwork, with two windows lacking glazing bars and an altered shop front. Number 48 features a narrow, stuccoed gabled front with two windows framed by architraves, including cornices and key stones to the heads, with a modern shop front at ground level. Number 49 has a stucco-faced parapet front, a small two-light casement window on the third floor, and tripartite sash windows on the first and second floors. It retains arcaded windows and a doorway leading to a Victorian shop front with console brackets supporting the fascia. Number 50 has a timber frame concealed by a late 18th or early 19th century stucco facing, with an overhang visible on the south side. It has a bracketed cornice, a deep parapet, and a tripartite sash window with glazing bars to the first and second floors. A deep moulded blind box or fascia is present on the 19th-century shop front with fluted pilasters and scrolled console brackets. A large 18th-century window with ten panes across by four panes high is found on the south return front, towards the right.

Numbers 47 to 50, along with No 1 Castle Hill, Market Cross House, The Town Hall and No 52 High Street, form a group of buildings of group value.
