Description
The Old Golden Gates railings and gates are ornamental features from the late 19th century, located on the west side of Cheapside Road in Sunninghill. Made of cast iron, they are adorned with gilded cresting and supported by rusticated Portland stone piers. The central double gates display the Royal Arms, while the single side gates are decorated with an acanthus leaf and fleur-de-lys pattern.
There are four gate piers, each with cornices. The inner pair is panelled and features a central circular motif, an upper stage with garlands, and is topped with the Royal Arms; the left arm is supported by a Lion, and the right by a Unicorn. The outer pair of piers have ball finials.
The railings, which have gilded fleur-de-lys heads, are set on low, stone-coped brick walls on either side of the gates, with the right side facing the Old Golden Gate Lodge. The railings are finished with piers that resemble the outer gate piers. These gates were formerly the entrance to Ascot Racecourse.
