GV II

Large house. Early C19, extended mid to late C19 in similar style; altered C20. painted render, hipped slate roof hidden behind parapet. Rectangular plan with extensions on north, large C20 conservatory attached at right angles to house, on the north. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. 2 chimneys with clay pots. Plat band at first floor level, moulded cornice, blocking course and parapet with pilasters. Sash windows with glazing bars. East (entrance) front: irregular fenestration, left hand section of 6 bays. Double, half glazed entrance door in third bay from left under projecting modified Doric, glazed, enclosed porch. Right hand section, regular, of 3 bays slightly set back. INTERIOR: not inspected. HISTORY: a former owner of the house was William Ellis, antiquary and friend of George Canning. He was a correspondent of Sir Walter Scott who visited The Cedars' and is reputed to have written part ofMarmion' in the garden.
