Description

The Cedars is a large house located in Sunninghill, built in the early 19th century and extended in a similar style during the mid to late 19th century, with alterations made in the 20th century. The exterior features painted render and a hipped slate roof that is hidden behind a parapet. The house has a rectangular plan with extensions to the north, including a large 20th-century conservatory that is attached at right angles to the main structure.

The house is two storeys tall and has two chimneys with clay pots. It features a plat band at the first floor level, a moulded cornice, a blocking course, and a parapet with pilasters. The sash windows include glazing bars. The east front, which serves as the entrance, has irregular fenestration with the left section consisting of six bays. There is a double, half-glazed entrance door located in the third bay from the left, sheltered by a projecting modified Doric porch that is glazed and enclosed. The right section of the entrance front is regular, comprising three bays that are slightly set back.

The interior has not been inspected. Historically, one of the former owners was William Ellis, an antiquary and friend of George Canning. He corresponded with Sir Walter Scott, who is said to have visited The Cedars and reputedly wrote part of his poem 'Marmion' in the garden.
