Description
Hodgson's House is a building that dates from the 19th century, with a yard elevation that dates back to around 1720. It was formerly two separate buildings. The east building features a colour-washed brick ground floor and a pebbledash first floor. It stands two storeys high with attics and has five modern double-hung sash windows. The ground floor windows are set in reveals with wooden bressumers, while the first-floor windows are framed with surrounds. There is a wooden entablature at the first-floor level that projects over a window, likely a former door, to create a hood. One of the first-floor windows is a three-light window with wooden transoms and mullions. The building has a coved cornice, an old tile roof, and four dormers.
The west building is constructed with red and grey stretchers and headers, also standing two storeys high with attics. It has four double-hung sash windows in surrounds and ground floor windows that feature cambered relieving arches. The door has a plain surround, a fanlight, and a hood. There is a band at the first-floor level, and it has a wooden coved and cyma reversa cornice, an old tile roof, and two dormers.
Hodgson's House, along with Gulliver's, Gulliver's End, St Christopher's, Old St Christopher's, and the premises occupied by Alden and Blackwell and Carter House, form a group of buildings of architectural interest.
