Description

Carter House is an 18th-century building constructed of red brick, featuring four storeys and five double-hung sash windows. The façade has a slight central projection with a round-headed feature on the first floor. The doorway is framed by Roman Doric three-quarter columns on plinths, topped with an entablature and an architrave surrounding a six-fielded panel door with a semi-circular fanlight above. There is a brick band at the first floor, and a cyma recta cornice over a band at the second floor, leading to a roof parapet. The windows retain their original glazing bars, and the property is complemented by original wrought iron railings.

To the west, the front facing Keats Lane is also red brick, with three storeys and an attic, featuring six double-hung sash windows set in reveals, with glazing bars, flat arches, and sills. The round-headed doorway here has a reeded doorcase adorned with carved lion heads, a traceried fanlight, and a six-panel door with four glass panels and two flush panels. There are bands at the first and second floor levels, a modillion cornice, an old tiled roof, and two box dormers.

Carter House, along with Gulliver's, Gulliver's End, St Christopher's, Old St Christopher's, Hodgson's House, and the premises occupied by Alden and Blackwell, form a cohesive group of buildings.
