Description

Tilleys Cottage is a timber-frame and painted brick building, originally two cottages, now combined into one. It dates back to the 16th century and has been altered and extended in the early and mid-19th century. The cottage has a long gabled roof covered in old tiles. The original rectangular plan was two bays wide, with extensions added to both ends. It is two stories high, with one chimney on the ridge and one on the right side. Most of the windows are 20th-century leaded casements. The front entrance, on the east side, is irregular. The central section has original windows, including a four-light window on the first floor to the left, a two-light oriel window to the right, a three-light window to the left on the ground floor, and a 20th-century lean-to porch to the right of this, with a plank door and a two-light window. To the right of the porch is a three-light window. The right-hand end of the cottage has a three-light window on both floors, and the left-hand end features a one- and two-light window on the first floor, and two two-light windows on the ground floor. The interior contains an inglenook fireplace with a bread oven. A principal beam in the dining room has chamfers and bar stops with run-out stops, and the roof includes a queen post with clasped purlins.
