Description
The Church of St John the Baptist is a parish church built in 1849 by R.C. Carpenter, designed in an early 14th-century style. A south chapel was added around 1866. The church is constructed of flint with Bath stone dressings and features a slate gabled and coped roof. It includes a nave, chancel, south aisle, south porch, and a bellcote. The exterior has a plinth and both angled and square buttresses. The timber gabled porch is adorned with cusping and a carved bargeboard.
On the south front, there are two-light windows with cusped tracery, square heads, and labels on the aisle. The south chapel has similar windows but with a two-centred arch, featuring mask and foliage labels. The east front showcases a three-light window with reticulated tracery, while the west front has a two-light window with cusped tracery.
Inside, the church has a plain white interior with a four-bay nave and an arch-braced collar roof. The chancel has a similar two-bay roof, but with thin arched wind braces supporting the side purlins. The south aisle features a four-bay arcade with alternate round and octagonal columns, complete with moulded capitals and bases. A stained glass window from 1893 by Kempe is located in the north wall.
