Description
This group of five gravestones, located approximately five metres from the south transept of the Church of St John the Baptist, dates from the 18th century. The gravestones include headstones and footstones for three graves.
The first headstone, which is the closest to the church, is small and features a shaped top with a carved skull and crossbones, commemorating Frances Newman, who died in 1722. The second headstone has a semi-circular top and displays a carved head that includes a skull flanked by a scythe and hourglass, adorned with swags. It memorializes Elizabeth Tooly, who died in 1715 at the age of 99, and Thomas Newman, who died in 1713. This headstone has a footstone inscribed with the letters E.T. T.N. 1714. The third headstone features a scrolled and shaped top with a carved but eroded head, serving as a memorial to John Southey and his wife Elizabeth, who died in 1762. This headstone also has a footstone inscribed with the letters J.S. and E.S.
