Description
Smewins Cottage is a disused cottage that was originally a moated house, dating from the 15th century, with alterations and extensions made in the 16th, 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. The building features a mix of timber framing, render, and brick infill, with some sections in Flemish bond and others in rat-trap bond. It has an irregular plan with gables on each front and stands two storeys high, with four chimneys. Most of the windows are 19th-century casements.
The entrance front faces east and is irregular in design. It includes two gables, each with exposed timber framing. The left gable projects further forward than the right and has a rendered, projecting plinth. It features a three-light window on the first floor and a single-light window to the left of centre on the ground floor, supported by a queen post roof truss. The right gable has a three-light casement window on the first floor with close-studding underneath, and a three-light casement window to the left of centre on the ground floor. This gable also has a redundant crown post roof truss with later queen struts and large jowled posts.
The section between the gables has rendered infill and a plain entrance door on the left, topped with a small tiled hood. To the right of the right gable is a later extension with brick facing, which includes a late 18th-century sash window featuring thin glazing bars and a cambered head. The gable return of this extension has a projecting gable chimney and some visible timber framing with rendered infill on the upper level, while the lower level has been underbuilt in brick. An interior inspection was not permitted during the survey. The moat on the northwest and south sides of the cottage is a scheduled ancient monument.
