Description

The Oxford Lodges to Basildon Park, including gates, gatepiers, and flanking walls, were built between 1776 and 1787 by John Carr and altered in 1842 by J.B. Papworth. The entrance features two gates from 1842 made of cast iron with spearhead railings and a dograil. The two gatepiers, constructed between 1776 and 1787, are made of ashlar stone with channelled rustication and a cornice, which were heightened in 1842 with the addition of putti supporting urns with fruit.

There are short linking walls on both sides, featuring a plinth, cornice, and pedestrian gateways with architraves and cast iron gates. The inner lodges, built between 1776 and 1787 and heightened in 1842, are made of ashlar stone with a plinth and string course, topped with a cornice and parapet. They have a slate roof with a central moulded stack and an octagonal plan. The north-east side features arched glazing bar sash windows with imposts and architraves, along with rectangular carved panels below the cornice adorned with garlands and lion masks.

The outer blocks, also built between 1776 and 1787, have a stack and porch added to the rear in 1842. They are made of ashlar stone with a plinth, cornice, and parapet, topped with a pyramidal slate roof and stack. The north-east side has one glazing bar sash window with chamfered reveals, another sash window at the rear, and an entrance with a four-panelled door in the angle to the rear. The flanking walls, dating from the 18th century, are made of ashlar and white brick, approximately 2.5 meters high and 50 meters long, stepping forward with quadrant corners, and topped with stone coping and square end piers. Basildon Park is managed by The National Trust and was established in 1982.
