Description
Goldwell House is a building located on the south side of Old Bath Road in Newbury, reputedly dating from around 1740, as indicated on the Willis map of 1768. It was remodeled and reroofed in the early 19th century. The house is three storeys tall and features a double front with three windows. It has a hipped slate roof with coved, projecting eaves. The exterior is made of multi-coloured stock brick, accented with rusticated stucco block quoins and plain bands at the floor levels, along with some elements of Bath stone. The entrance bay slightly projects, and the central bays on the returns have pediments. The recessed sash windows, which have glazing bars, are framed by plain surrounds. A late 19th-century stone portico with a balustraded parapet adds to the entrance. Inside, there is a 17th-century style staircase featuring close strings, square newels, and turned balusters.
