Description
Chilton Lodge is a Grade II* mansion built in 1800, designed in the classical Palladian style. It features a hipped slate roof and is faced with ashlar Bath stone over a brick structure. The building has a rectangular plan with a service wing that connects to a stable block to the northeast. The east elevation consists of seven bays arranged in a 2-3-2 pattern, with a slight emphasis on the center. The original porte cochere has been replaced by a 20th-century door surround that includes Ionic variant pilasters and a pediment. To the north, there is a three-bay service wing that includes occasional vitrified bricks, arched recesses, a stone band at the impost level, and rubbed brick voussoirs, with glazing bar sash windows throughout.
The south elevation has five bays, featuring a full-height Corinthian tetrastyle portico with a pediment and modillion cornices, which is accessed by eight steps. The side wings on the ground floor have arched recesses with balustraded aprons and a plinth with a moulded string at the ground floor cill level. Inside, the mansion boasts high-quality features in the Queen Anne and Adam styles.
