Description

Bridge House is a 18th-century assembly room or villa that has been converted into a house. Built in 1766, it incorporates some earlier work. The building is constructed of brick, featuring a gable made of brick laced flint, and has a tiled roof. It is two stories high with an attic and consists of five bays, plus a slightly recessed bay to the right. The entrance is now located at the earlier section that forms the back wing of the 18th-century riverside facade. The entrance hall was replanned in 1941.

The riverside block is one room deep, containing a low ground floor with the 'Long room', a parlour, and a library, while the first floor is high. The entrance features a narrow Adam style doorcase with a broken pediment. The river front includes a central glazed door leading from the Long room and twelve-pane sash windows. On the first floor, there are three high six-pane sash windows with radial brick heads, stone keys, and springers on the left side. The attic has three nine-pane sashes behind a parapet. The gable displays the initials T x H and rainwater heads dated 1766.

Inside, the piano nobile on the first floor is 16 feet high and includes two rooms with cornices and applique paterae of roses, which have been converted into three bedrooms. There is also a small 18th-century turned baluster stair.
