Description
The Homestead is a pair of cottages, originally one, built in the late 19th century with 20th-century additions, designed by Alfred Waterhouse. The structure is made of red brick, featuring some tile hanging on the first floor of the western addition. A decorative band runs between the floors, consisting of two strings with diagonal projecting headers, and the window heads alternate between brick and tile. The roof is covered with old tiles and has toothed verges, while the western wing includes a gabled semi-dormer with a segmental-headed two-light casement facing south. The building has a central ridge stack with an oversailing top and an end stack to the north. It has a T-plan with later additions and is one and a half storeys tall.
On the south front, the first floor features a three-light segmental-headed casement in the gable end, with a four-light segmental-headed casement below it on the ground floor, along with a one-storey lean-to to the left. There is also a two-light segmental-headed casement set back to the left on the ground floor. To the right, there is a 20th-century one-storey addition that includes a porch, a half-glazed door, and two two-light casements. The west front has a three-light segmental-headed casement in the gable end to the right, with a four-light segmental-headed casement below it, and a two-light casement in the 20th-century gabled wing projecting to the left, which has a door below. The building is included for its group value.
