Description

Poplar Farmhouse is a house dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. It is timber framed with brick refacing and has an old tile roof. The building features an end stack to the right and a panelled stack on the ridge, which is off-centre to the left. There is a gable to the left with a blank window and a raised brick band that runs across the foot, along with a gabled cross wing to the right. The house is two storeys high and has four windows on the ground floor and four on the first floor, all of which are casements, with some featuring leaded lights. There is a blocked window above the door to the left.

The doorways are located with gabled porches, one to the right of the first window from the left and the other to the left of the first window from the right. The doorway to the left has a moulded surround and a boarded door with high-quality contemporary fittings, including hinges, studs, bolts, and a latch. The rear of the house has some exposed timber framing, a doorway with a moulded surround, and a projecting staircase block to the right.

Inside, the farmhouse features good moulded beams, door surrounds, and fireplaces. There is a 17th-century staircase with a ball finial on the newel post. Poplar Farmhouse is a notable example of a small Berkshire house from this period, particularly remarkable for the preservation of its interior fittings.
