Description
34 London Road is a building that likely dates from the early 18th century and has been altered over time. It was formerly the Manor House of Speenhamland. The house is two storeys tall with dormers and has a double front with five windows. It features a tiled roof and a stucco front with a moulded eaves cornice. There are three flat-topped dormers with sash windows that have small panes. The early 19th-century windows are recessed sash types with glazing bars, and the ground floor windows include sidelights. A modern prostyle portico with Tuscan columns and a dentil cornice leads to a panelled door. At the rear, there is a brick staircase projection flanked by two gabled wings, one finished in stucco and the other in late brick. Inside, there is an early 18th-century staircase with a closed string, newels, and renewed balusters. The Willis map of 1768 indicates that this house was originally freestanding, with elaborate formal gardens at the rear and an axial tree-lined avenue across London Road.
