Description
44 London Road is a building dating from around 1759, as indicated by the date on the brickwork. It was constructed as a western extension of the former Dower House, which has since been demolished. The Willis map of 1768 shows No 44 as part of the King's Arms Inn. The building has two storeys and features dormers. The main front on the east side has three windows and a hipped slate roof. It is made of multi-coloured stock brick with red brick dressings. There are four flat-topped dormer sashes with glazing bars and gauged segmental-arched sash windows with glazing bars. Above the central doorway is a round-arched window. The ground floor has modern bow-fronted windows in the Regency style. The round-arched doorway features a radial fanlight and a console-bracketted head. Inside, there is a contemporary staircase and an "Adam" chimneypiece in the first-floor room.
