Description
Thicket Cottage is a late 16th-century cottage with a late 17th-century extension and 20th-century additions and alterations. It is built of painted brick with tiled roofs. The original 16th-century block runs north-south, situated west of a 17th-century block that runs east-west. There are 20th-century extensions to the east and south of the 17th-century block, and an outshut to the west of the 16th-century block with a central stair tower. The 17th and 20th-century blocks are two storeys high, the 20th-century extension to the east is single-storey, and the 16th-century block to the west is one and a half storeys. A central ridge chimney is visible on the 16th-century block, and a ridge chimney is at the east end of the 17th-century block.
The north elevation features a single-story extension to the left with a hipped roof and 1 and 2-light casement windows. The central two-story block has two mullion and transom windows on the first floor, one window and an entrance door to the right on the ground floor. The 16th-century block projects forward to the right, with a half-hip roof over a 3-light casement window above a 2-light casement window.
Inside the 16th-century block, the timber frame consists of one long bay and one short bay, with a large central chimney incorporating back-to-back fireplaces. The fireplace to the north includes a bread oven. A staircase rises beside and over the chimney on the west side. A lobby on the east side suggests a former lobby entry plan.
